STOM: Science Teachers of Missouri

Science Teachers of Missouri is the state chapter of the National Science Teachers Association. As the state chapter, STOM works closely with NSTA on education issues at the National Level.

STOM serves as a link with the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, speaking for teachers on matters related to science education. Our members have assisted with national grant proposals, workshop presentations and revisions of key skills.

Members of Science Teacher of Missouri are advisors for the Education Satellite Network (ESN), which is sponsored by the Missouri School Board Association. Programs produced by ESN are seen throughout the state and nation.

Missouri Building a Presence for Science Network-- a collaborative effort involving Mid-Continent Research for Education and Learning (McREL), STOM, and DESE. The Building a Presence (BaP) Online System is designed to create a central database of teachers, organizations, businesses and industries, and others responsible for both formal and informal science education in the state, and to provide a powerful communication platform that would allow a steady flow of information, not only among state participants but also from NSTA and the program’s National Partners to the participants through coordinator-monitored communications.

STOM board members are following and participating in the Governor's Task Force on Mathematics, Engineering, Technology and Science (METS)

Legislation: STOM continually works to monitor legislation affecting science education in the state and keep the membership informed. Recently, a number of bills have been introduced into the Missouri legislature which will directly impact how science is taught. Specifically these bills affect the teaching of evolution and the concept of intelligent design.
